Conversion to Tachs
Every year, Ford changed the design of underdash harnesses, often times within each model year! Here's a quick guide for identifying each vintage Mustang underdash Harness. We have highlighted only those unique features for each model year. Assume that the design carries on for the following year until a change is noted.
1964.5: An unique oversize fuse box, all turn signal connectors are female bullet wires, headlamp connector has non-parallel pins and gauge firewall plug has 7 female and 1 male pin.
1965 Falcon Dash: Gauge firewall plug has 6 female pins and no male pins. Turn signal connector now has 6 pins. Fuse box now standard size. Headlamp connector has parallel design.
1965 GT/Pony Interior: Gauge firewall plug has 6 female pins and 1 male pin.
1966: Gauge firewall plug has 6 female pins and 2 male pins.
1967: Headlamp harness feed connectors consist of a 4 pin red plug, 2 pin yellow plug, 3 pin blue plug, and a 4 pin black plug. The gauge firewall has a grommet to a 3 pin black plug and 4 pin neutral safety switch/backup lamp plug. Turn signal plug has 10 pin connector (9 used) and a 12 pin dash cluster harness connector.
1968: Headlamp harness feed connectors consist of a 5 pin red plug, 2 pin yellow plug, 4 pin black plug, and a flat 4 pin black plug. The gauge firewall has a grommet to a 3 pin flat plug and a 4 pin NSS/backup lamp plug. The ignition switch has 5 of 6 pins used, and is irregularly shaped. The turn signal connector is curved. Dash cluster consists of two plugs, each 8 pins: one male, one female.
1969: Headlamp harness feed connector is a green multipin block fastened to the fuse box. The gauge harness feed connector has a firewall connector and a 3 pin flat connector, a 4 pin NSS/backup light plug, and a 4 pin wiper connector. The dash connector is now an 18 pin circuit card connector. Turn signal is curved.
1970: Similar to 1969, except igniton switch now 6 of 8 pin parallel gray connector. Gauge harness extends all the way to the battery and alternator (unique to this year).
1971: Similar to 1969 and 1970, but ignition is now black with red stripe on connector face. Gauge harness has plugs beyond firewall. Tach version has 12 pin dash connector instead of 18 pins. Red molded plug going to rear has 3 of 4 pins used.
1972: Similar to 1971. Near right side, a red plastic plug has 4 of 6 pins used. Tach version has 12 pin dash connector instead of 18 pins. Red molded plug going to rear has 3 of 4 pins used.
1973. Similar to 1972, but turn signal connector is now heavy duty. Tach version has 12 pin dash connector instead of 18 pins. Red molded plug going to rear has 2 of three pins used.
